This course provides a detailed review of anticoagulant therapy, thromboembolic disorders, and coagulation lab interpretation for nursing students and practicing nurses, designed for NCLEX preparation. It begins with heparin pharmacology, including mechanism of action, nursing interventions, monitoring, and patient education. Warfarin (Coumadin) therapy is compared with heparin, highlighting differences in mechanism, onset, monitoring, and dietary considerations. Heparin drip calculation practice problems are included to ensure accurate dosage administration. The course explores deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and venous thromboembolism (VTE), explaining pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, risk factors, and nursing management strategies. Virchow’s Triad is reviewed to understand the underlying causes of thrombosis. Essential coagulation lab values, including PT/INR and aPTT, are discussed, with emphasis on interpretation and nursing actions to prevent complications. By the end of this course, nurses will be equipped with practical knowledge to safely administer anticoagulants, manage thromboembolic disorders, interpret lab results, educate patients effectively, and apply critical thinking skills to NCLEX scenarios and real-world practice.
