This course provides an in-depth look at research and development activities conducted on the International Space Station (ISS) National Laboratory and the associated policy frameworks that guide space science and engineering. Students will learn about major R&D projects, including collaborative experiments across disciplines, technological innovations, and scientific advancements enabled by the ISS.

The course covers key policy discussions and impacts presented by leading experts, policymakers, and government representatives, including the Department of Energy and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Participants will gain insights from ASME Policy Impact sessions and Virtual Town Halls featuring U.S. Representatives and scientific leaders, providing a practical understanding of how space research influences national and international policies.

Additionally, the course highlights strategic considerations in managing research priorities, funding, and international collaboration, as well as challenges in space-based supply chains and technology transfer. By the end of this course, learners will have a comprehensive understanding of the intersection between scientific research, policy, and engineering innovation on the ISS, equipping them with knowledge applicable to careers in space science, engineering, and science policy.
