This course is a comprehensive introduction to textile design and surface pattern design, created for aspiring designers, self-taught artists, and creatives who want to understand the field and develop strong, practical skills. It covers what textile design is, the different types of fabric and surface pattern design, and how designers work creatively and professionally.

You will learn how to set up a functional home studio, develop your first patterns, and design vector repeat patterns using Adobe Illustrator. The course explores color theory for pattern design, including how to fix clashing colors, choose effective color palettes, and work with Pantone Color of the Year in commercial designs. You will also learn how to preview patterns correctly, follow design trends, and apply inspiration without copying other designers’ work.

Creative growth topics include developing originality, designing even if you cannot draw, finding inspiration, and building confidence as a designer. The course also demonstrates how textile designs are applied to real products such as throw pillows, scarves, dresses, and Spoonflower fabric collections.

In addition, you will gain insight into finding pattern design clients, understanding current design trends, and building a long-term career as a textile or fabric designer. By the end of this course, you will have a clear creative and professional foundation to move forward confidently in textile design.
